The Complete Guide to Pond Construction, Desilting, Wildlife Ponds, Wetland Restoration & Water Management

Everything you need to know about building, restoring and maintaining ponds, wetlands and lakes in Kent and East Sussex — from new construction and wildlife ponds to desilting, leak repairs and ongoing care.

About Ponds in Kent & East Sussex

Ponds and lakes are a defining feature of the Kent and East Sussex countryside — from farm irrigation ponds to wildlife ponds and garden features. Every pond needs proper construction and maintenance to stay healthy and functional.

We've been building, restoring and maintaining ponds and lakes across the South East for over 10 years — from small garden ponds to estate lakes, handling every stage in-house.

Types of Ponds We Build & Maintain

Wildlife Ponds

Designed to support aquatic plants, insects and amphibians with sloping sides, varying depths and natural lining. We create new wildlife ponds and restore neglected ones — desilting, reshaping and replanting with native species.

Garden Ponds

From small ornamental ponds to larger water features, built with membrane liners, proper overflows and integrated planting. Our mini excavators access gardens through standard gates.

Estate Lakes

Significant excavation, proper lining and carefully designed overflows. We construct estate lakes from scratch — excavating, shaping banks, lining and installing inlets.

Attenuation Ponds

Store surface water temporarily and release it slowly to prevent downstream flooding. Increasingly required for development sites as part of SuDS.

Irrigation & Stock Ponds

Water for agricultural use — irrigation, livestock and fire fighting reserves. We also desilt and restore existing farm ponds that have silted up.

The Pond Construction Process

Building a new pond involves several key stages:

  1. 1.Site assessment and design — we assess the ground conditions, water sources, and outfall options, and design the pond's shape, depth, lining and overflow.
  2. 2.Excavation — we excavate the pond to the designed shape and depth with our excavators, shaping the banks and creating varying depths for aquatic habitat.
  3. 3.Lining — we line the pond with puddled clay (the traditional, natural method) or a membrane liner (butyl or PVC), depending on the pond's purpose and ground conditions.
  4. 4.Overflow and inlet installation — we install the overflow pipe and inlet to control the water level and ensure proper water management.
  5. 5.Filling and finishing — the pond fills naturally from groundwater, rainfall or a diverted water source, and we finish the banks and surrounding area.

All construction carried out with our own excavators — no subcontractors, no delays.

Pond Desilting & Restoration

Every pond naturally silts up over time — soil, leaves and organic matter wash in and reduce depth and capacity. A pond that was 1.5m deep may become just 30cm, too shallow to support healthy aquatic life.

We drain if needed, excavate the silt, reshape banks and bed, repair leaks, restore overflow and refill. For neglected ponds, we also clear vegetation, remove trees and reshape slumped banks. Find out more on our silted pond restoration page.

Wetland Works & Restoration

Wetlands are among the most valuable and threatened habitats in the South East. We carry out wetland creation and restoration for conservation projects, estates, farms and development sites — re-establishing habitat that supports biodiversity and reduces downstream flooding.

Our works include scrape construction, reed bed creation, marginal habitat works, ditch restoration and water level management. We work with landowners and conservation organisations across Kent and East Sussex.

Fixing Leaking Ponds

A leaking pond is common — water escapes through damaged lining, cracked pipes or animal burrowing. We diagnose the cause by inspecting construction, lining, overflow and banks.

For clay-lined ponds, we re-line with fresh puddled clay. For membrane ponds, we repair or replace the liner. Find out more on our pond leaking repair page.

Pond Maintenance — Keeping Your Pond Healthy

A pond is a living ecosystem that needs regular maintenance to stay healthy. Without ongoing care, ponds become overgrown, silted up and stagnant — problems that are much more expensive to fix than to prevent.

Our pond maintenance services include:

  • Silt removal — partial or full desilting to restore depth and water quality
  • Vegetation management — controlling reeds, rushes and marginal plants to prevent them taking over
  • Algae and blanket weed control — physical removal and addressing the nutrient cause
  • Bank repairs — fixing erosion, slumping and animal damage
  • Overflow and inlet clearance — ensuring water can flow freely in and out

We recommend annual or biennial maintenance for most ponds. Regular maintenance extends the life of the pond, prevents expensive restoration work, and keeps the waterbody looking its best. Find out more on our pond cleaning & maintenance page.

Pond Works FAQs

How much does pond construction cost in Kent and East Sussex?

The cost depends on the size and depth of the pond, the ground conditions, the lining method (clay or membrane), and the inlet and overflow requirements. Small garden ponds cost from a few thousand pounds; large estate lakes can cost significantly more. We provide free quotes after a site visit — call us on 07376 622637.

How often should a pond be desilted?

Most ponds need desilting every 5 to 15 years, depending on the amount of silt entering the pond from surrounding land, trees, and runoff. Signs that your pond needs desilting include reduced depth, algae blooms, and vegetation encroaching into the open water.

What is the best lining for a pond?

Puddled clay is the traditional and most natural lining method, ideal for larger ponds and wildlife ponds. Butyl and PVC membrane liners are durable and flexible, suitable for most pond sizes. For attenuation ponds, we may use a combination of clay and membrane. We recommend the best lining for each specific pond.

Do you build wildlife ponds and garden ponds?

Yes, we build wildlife ponds, garden ponds, stock ponds, irrigation ponds, attenuation ponds and large estate lakes across Kent and East Sussex. We handle every stage from excavation and bank shaping through to lining, overflow installation and planting, and we also restore neglected wildlife ponds to support aquatic plants, amphibians and local biodiversity.

Do you carry out wetland works and wetland restoration?

Yes. We carry out wetland creation, wetland restoration, wetland scrape construction, reed bed creation and marginal habitat works for conservation, agricultural and development sites across Kent and East Sussex — restoring drained or degraded wetland to functioning habitat and managing water levels for biodiversity and flood attenuation.

How do you desilt a pond?

We drain the pond if needed, then excavate the accumulated silt from the bed using our excavators. The silt is loaded into dumpers or grab lorries and either spread on adjacent land or removed from site. We then reshape the banks, repair any leaks, restore the overflow, and refill the pond.

What areas do you cover for pond construction and maintenance?

We cover Kent and East Sussex from our base in Battle, East Sussex — including Hastings, Bexhill, Eastbourne, Tunbridge Wells, Cranbrook, Hawkhurst, Tenterden, Hailsham, Heathfield, Rye, Lewes, Robertsbridge and all surrounding towns and villages.
