Pond Creation & Construction in East Sussex: Building Ponds That Last

Expert pond construction for East Sussex estates, farms and rural properties. Wildlife ponds, irrigation ponds, ornamental lakes and drainage attenuation ponds. Free site surveys across Sussex.
A well-designed pond transforms a piece of land. It creates habitat, stores water for irrigation, manages drainage, and adds significant value to a rural property. But building a pond that actually holds water, supports the ecosystem you want, and doesn't become a maintenance nightmare requires more than just digging a hole.
At Subsoil Land & Water, we've been constructing ponds and water features across East Sussex for over a decade — from small wildlife ponds on private estates to large irrigation reservoirs for working farms and ornamental lakes on country properties. Here's what goes into getting it right.
Types of Ponds We Construct
Wildlife Ponds
Designed to support local biodiversity — frogs, newts, dragonflies, and aquatic plants. Typically shallow, with graduated margins and a mix of depths. We use natural liners or clay puddling depending on soil conditions, and plant native species that establish quickly and require minimal maintenance.
Irrigation & Agricultural Ponds
For farms and estates that need water storage for irrigation, livestock, or crop spraying. Engineered for capacity and reliability, with proper inlet and outlet structures, overflow management, and access for maintenance. Sized based on your water demand and local rainfall data.
Ornamental Ponds & Lakes
For country estates, large gardens, and private properties where the pond is a visual feature. We work with the existing landscape to create naturalistic water bodies that look like they've always been there — with stone margins, island features, and planting that complements the surroundings.
Drainage Attenuation Ponds
Increasingly required by planning authorities for new builds and agricultural developments. These ponds capture surface water runoff during heavy rainfall and release it slowly, preventing downstream flooding. We design and build attenuation ponds that meet SuDS requirements while blending into the landscape.
Pond Restoration & Relining
Many older ponds in East Sussex leak, silt up, or have damaged liners. We carry out full restorations — desilting, relining with butyl, clay, or HDPE, repairing dams and embankments, and re-establishing planting.
The Construction Process
Every pond project starts with a site survey. We assess soil type and natural water table, catchment area and water supply, topography and contours, outfall and overflow, and planning and environmental considerations.
From there, we mark out the site, excavate to the designed profile, install lining if required, create margins and planting zones, and establish the water supply and overflow systems. We use our own mini-diggers and excavators, so we can work in tight spaces and sensitive sites.
Why Local Knowledge Matters
East Sussex's clay soils can be a pond builder's best friend or worst enemy. In the right conditions, clay can form a natural impermeable liner — meaning a pond can be built without any synthetic lining at all. But if the clay is mixed with sand, gravel, or chalk, it will leak. Knowing the difference comes from years of digging in this ground.
We also understand the local planning landscape. Pond construction in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), or near listed buildings may require specific permissions. We advise on this upfront so there are no surprises.
Based in Battle, we construct and restore ponds across Battle, Lewes, Hastings, Eastbourne, Uckfield, Crowborough, Hailsham, and the wider East Sussex, West Sussex, and Kent area. Free site surveys available — call us or use the enquiry form to book.
